Indexes to tower bell sites in Germany

Tower bell instruments or collections of 8 or more bells can be found in Germany.  This Website has a site data page for each such instrument or collection which is known.  To facilitate finding pages of interest to visitors, as well as to show related information about groups of sites, those site data pages are indexed in several different ways, as follows:

• Tower bell sites in this area can be categorized according to the type of instrument.  Each of the pages linked here presents a variety of indexes for one particular type of instrument:

• NOTE:   In site entries within these indexes and on the heading line of each referenced site data page, the name of this country may be shown in any of three different ways, depending on where the site is located and whether or not the instrument was installed or significantly modified during the period when Germany was divided into East and West (approximately 1947-1990).  The three designations are as follows:
  • "GERMANY-BRD" for those sites which are located in what was called West Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or BRD).
  • "GERMANY-DDR" for those sites which are located in what was called East Germany (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, or DDR).
  • "GERMANY" for sites that were not installed or modified during the period of division, regardless of whether they are in what was East Germany or what was West Germany.  (Also used for towns where the state is not known.)
  The purpose of this differentiation is to help make connections with historical documentation that was written during or about the period of division.  No political implications are intended.
  (In the Location section of site data pages, the name "Germany" is always used without any divisional designator.)
  For sites where the date of installation is not known, the appropriate divisional designator is used if that date might fall during the period of division.
  For technical reasons, all index entries for a particular site carry the same designation, even when they exist because of an installation or modification that occurred outside the period of division.
  If you believe that a particular site carries the wrong designation, please use the email link at the bottom of that site data page to tell the database owner your reasons.
