This page reports on the evolution of the top level of the GCNA Website, commencing with the change of Webmaster which took effect at the end of the 2007 GCNA Congress.  The changes are reported in reverse order, with the latest at the top.  Dates show when pages were installed on the Web server, which is not always the same as their internal dates of revision.

2008/03/10 - Revised the home page and this page to make available an RSS feed as an alternate source of Website News.  "Articles" in the feed will correspond to paragraphs on this page, but they may not be worded identically.  They may point to a changed page or to this page, depending on the nature of the update.

2008/03/04 - Revised the Guild Information page and the Membership Information page for clarity.

2008/02/18 - Added Singing Winds Music Company to the page of Other Music Sources.

2008/01/18 - Revised the handler for the "Error 404" event to recognize the origin of the request (keyin, GCNA Webpage, or other Webpage) and give appropriate advice to the visitor.

2008/01/04 - Added a handler for the "Error 404" event.

2008/01/02 - Expanded the Advancement Examination Information page to include requirements for the 2009 examination process, as provided by the chair of the Examination committee.

The separate News page for the Data section now has a "statement of direction" for future developments there.

2007/12/18 - Revived the long-lost Glossary page (not to be confused with a similar feature in the Data section of this Website).

Corrected two Weblinks on the bell recordings page, and added an in-page menu.

In the Music Catalog section, split one page into separate pages for Duets and Collections; split another page into separate pages for Folk Tune Settings and Hymn Settings.

2007/12/03 - Corrected email address for ACME on the music sources page.

Minor tweaks to format of new version of home page and Guild info page.

2007/11/29 - Replaced home page with a simplified new version, with much of the former content shifted to a new Guild information page.  Also added were a site map and a search facility.

Supplied PDF file of Carillon News #78 (Fall 2007), linked from the new Guild information page (see above).

2007/11/20 - Revised Vermont entries in the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, and replaced the matching PDF file.

2007/11/15 - Revised several entries in the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, and replaced the matching PDF file.

2007/11/11 - Corrected three egregious errors in, and re-titled, the Information and Contacts page.  (All links to the page are unaffected.)

2007/10/16 - Added the Websites of the Berkeley Carillon Institute and Neil Thornock to the page about other sources of carillon music.

2007/10/09 - Revised one entry in the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, and replaced the matching PDF file.

2007/09/14 - Standardized display of heading frieze on the music catalog pages.

Provided correct link for 2008 Composition Competition rules.

2007/09/11 - Provided correct postal address for membership inquiries.  The PDF application form has also been revised.

2007/09/07 - Provided correct email address for membership inquiries.

2007/09/03 - Provided Barnes Scholarship application form for 2008 in both PDF and DOC formats, and updated the Barnes Scholarship page accordingly.

Corrected special-character encoding on the revised music catalog pages.

2007/09/02 - Updated the Barnes Scholarship page (but NOT the associated PDF) to show the 2008 deadline.

2007/08/30 - Revised most of the music catalog pages to reflect items added to the catalog in 2007.

2007/08/07 - Corrected the Corresponding Secretary on the GCNA Information page.

2007/08/03 - Revised one entry in the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, and replaced the matching PDF file.

2007/08/01 - Revised two entries in the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, and replaced the matching PDF file.

Supplied dates for 2008 Congress on the home page.

2007/07/26 - Corrected two entries in the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, and replaced the matching PDF file.

2007/07/24 - Added entries for four carillons to the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007.

Updated some committee chairs on the GCNA Information page.

2007/07/22 - Added entries for three carillons to the Summer Concert Schedule for 2007, revised one for which the summer series was cancelled, added two introductory paragraphs of text, and provided links from each entry to the corresponding site data page for that carillon.  Also changed filenames so that "summer.html" is always the current year; thus back-links from the site data pages to it are automatically up to date.
Replaced the matching PDF file.

2007/07/01 - Created this page.  (See the section "1996-2007" below for the reason.)

Merged the music catalog pages into the home directory, revising links appropriately.

Changed all email links for contacting the Webmaster, and added a Subject parameter to reflect the page from which each is invoked.

Moved all PDF files into a separate subdirectory;
moved all graphic files (GIFs and JPEGs) into a separate subdirectory;
revised all page links to PDF and graphic files appropriately.

Made some of the changes necessitated by elections, appointments and actions taken at the 2007 GCNA Congress.  (Other changes remain to be done.)

1996-2007 - Norman Bliss presented a pilot version of a proposed GCNA Website to the 1996 GCNA Congress.  After the Guild approved Norman's concept and general design, Wylie Crawford contracted for Web hosting services, and in December 1996 Norman installed the initial version of this Website (i.e., what is now the top-level section) for public access.  Shortly thereafter, Carl Zimmerman added the initial version of the technical section of this Website.  These three people have continued to be responsible for their respective areas, and have formed the core of the Guild's Internet Committee during the succeeding years.  From time to time, other Guild members have provided assistance with subject matter.

At the 2006 Congress, Norman expressed a desire to step down as Webmaster, and it was also decided that a new design for the Website would be useful.  Norman continued to serve as interim Webmaster until the 2007 Congress, when Carl Zimmerman was appointed to carry on as interim Webmaster for the top-level section of the Website until the new design becomes available.  Most of the subsequent changes to this section will be for routine maintenance of the material presented to visitors.  However, other changes (including the installation of the page which you are now reading) will reflect Carl's personal standards for maintainability, usability and style, operating within the constraints of Norman's basic design.
