THE 55TH CONGRESS OF THE GUILD OF CARILLONNEURS IN NORTH AMERICA

University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas,
June 4-7, 1997

THE UNIVERSITY AND
THE CARILLON

The University is home to some 28,000 students and 2,000 faculty and staff.  The picturesque campus is situated atop Mount Oread overlooking the Kansas and Wakarusa river valleys to the north and south.

Central to the campus and the Congress's activities is the World War II Memorial Campanile and Carillon. The 120-foot Campanile, built of native Kansas limestone, contains a 53-bell carillon cast in 1950 by the John Taylor Company of Loughborough, England. The Bourdon, or heaviest bell, weighs 13,440 lbs and sounds the note F#. The carillon, dedicated on May 27,1951, was rededicated on April 26,1996, following a total renovation made possible through the generosity of Joan and Keith Bunnel, honorary members of the GCNA. The renovation was completed by the Verdin Company and Meeks & Watson.
