Saint Stephen's Church

is the home of the Cohasset Carillon, which began as a 23 bell carillon cast by Gillett &Johnston of Croydon, England. It was enlarged to 43 bells in 1925, and 8 more bells were added in 1928. In 1989-90 the carillon was renovated by the John Taylor Bell Foundry of Loughborough, England. The carillon now has 57 bells; the heaviest, or Bourdon, weighs 11,200 lbs.


Recitals

Featured recitalists at Cohasset were Marcia de Bary, Geert D'Hollander, Todd Fair, George Gregory, and Milford Myhre; and on the Wednesday tour, Marilyn Clark (Gloucester), John Gouwens (Norwood), Sally Slade Warner (Wellesley), and an organ recital by Brian Swager at the world-renowned Methuen Memorial Music Hall.


Presentations and Workshops:

Baroque Performance Practice; Chimes and Chimers; Two Michigan Carillons--an Innovation and a Renovation; A Look at Sowerby's "Fantasy-Fugue" for Carillon; New Happenings at Amersfoort; and a special surprise presentation.


Other Carillons Visited:

Norwood Municipal Building (50 bells, Gillett &Johnston); Wellesley College's Galen Stone Tower (32 bells by Gillett &Johnston and Taylor); Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage, Gloucester (31 Taylor bells).


Post Congress Activities

A post-congress day in Boston was held Saturday, June 29, including visits to Old North Church, and other bell towers.
